A branch of the religious community “Sisters of Our Lady of the Refuge in Mount Calvary,” which was founded in Italy in 1631, was established in Thrissur, India. A house for the vocational training of the members of this religious community became a necessity. For this reason, the then Mother General, Rev. Luija Sommakal, spoke with the Venerable Father Mar Joseph Kundukulam and obtained permission to start a novitiate house.

Bishop Mar Joseph Kundukulam blessed this house in 1987. The aspirants are trained here, and after their training, they work with great love and readiness to serve in India, Italy, and America. There is no doubt that this house has given a new shape and dimension to the aspirants who come here. This house is part of the Mulayam St. Patrick Parish. Holy Mass is offered in the chapel of this house three days a week. In addition, the institution stands as a source of solace for people of all castes and religions in the surrounding areas through its spirit of prayer and loving presence. We strive to address the burning issues of the common people (regardless of caste or religion) and become a refuge for them.

The Sisters work with the parish vicar in the pastoral activities of the parish. They regularly conduct catechesis and house visits. Since an atmosphere conducive to prayer is possible here, this house provides an opportunity for junior Sisters to have monthly retreats and spiritual guidance. Leading prayers in family groups is also part of our work. It is in this house that junior Sisters prepare for perpetual vows and new Sisters are prepared for their first vows.

This institution, which began with the blessings of Father Mar Joseph Kundukulam, has been dedicated to moulding good aspirants and giving them to the Church for the past 49 years. Approximately 60 Sisters have received their training here. The commendable service of all the authorities at different times will never be forgotten. The powerful providence of God has been behind the growth of this house.
