St. Virginis Centurione Bracelli, daughter of George Centurione of Genoa, experienced a radical conversion to a life of service following widowhood and a mystical call in which Our Lady at the foot of the Cross entrusted her with care for the suffering poor. From that call grew the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Refuge in Mount Calvary, whose spirit emphasizes presence at the “Calvary’s” of human suffering through humility, poverty. and devoted service.
Their spirituality centre’s on the Paschal Mystery Christ’s Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension and on Marian fidelity as “Refuge of Calvary.” St. Joseph and St. Francis of Assisi are invoked as patrons: models of interior life, poverty, and loving service.

The community, living out this charism, has under taken various apostolates to achieve its goals, adapting to the circumstances and needs of different eras. The founder wished for the community to possess nothing of its own, but instead to offer humble and insignificant service to God’s people. By selflessly serving in the community’s houses and other institutions, the congregation has been able to continue its long journey in the spirit of its founder. In 1953, the congregation received pontifical recognition. Before the founder, Mother Virginia, was declared “Blessed,” another member of the community, Sister Maria Repetto, was declared “Blessed” in 1984.
The daughters of Virginia reach out with helping hands to countless people who are helpless and destitute, in need of spiritual and material assistance. The Sisters are involved in various apostolates, including parish ministry, spiritual guidance and assistance for those in prison, service to the elderly, ministry among morally fallen youth, teaching, care for the sick, running hostels, and ministry to intellectually disabled children. In response to the needs of both the state and the Church, the congregation established convents in various parts of Italy to support its growth. Later, they wished to expand their service to other mission countries. In 1972, a convent was started in Bafia, Central Africa; in 1975, in Kerala, India; in 1992, in Santo Domingo, Latin America; and in 2001, in Nicaragua.
In all these convents, the Sisters collaborate with the parish to elevate the spiritual standards of the people and provide education and healthcare. They are also active in all parish activities. Today, these convents also provide vocations. The African mission was closed in 2000. When the number of vocations to religious life decreased in Italy, the community authorities contacted Monsignor Joseph Vilangadan of the Thrissur Archdiocese. From 1967, they began taking young women who desired religious life to Italy after their initial training. Later, they started a house in the Thrissur Archdiocese itself. This first house was established as a centre for vocation promotion. Subsequently, they also began institutions to train intellectually disabled children. The first convent was started in the Cheroor Vijayapuram parish in 1975. In 1987, a new convent was established in Mulayam, a postulant house in Peramangalam in 1990, and an aspirant house in Kundukad in 1997 and now it turned into a lay mission of Latin diocese of kottapuram(2024). In all these houses, the Sisters actively collaborate with the parish vicars in catechesis, family prayer groups, and house visits.
In 1998, the Mount Calvary religious community was established in the Kalyan Diocese in Mumbai. Here, too, the Sisters work with the parish vicar in parish ministry, catechesis, and family prayer groups. In addition to this, a crèche and a nursery are run under the Sisters’ leadership. Since 2005, a community has been established in Shahada, Nandurbar district, Maharashtra, where the Sisters are involved in teaching. In 2009, they purchased land in the Ponnukkara parish in the Thrissur Archdiocese to build a convent for the care and service of the elderly. Here, too, the Sisters collaborate with the vicar in all parish activities.
Holy Spirit Convent, Kallamkunnu established on 2nd September 2022, with 15 cents of land graciously gifted by Rev. Fr. Joseph Pozhoilparamban. Its mission is centered on the education of underprivileged children, youth ministry, and faith formation, fostering both human and spiritual development. Divine Mercy Convent, Ezhattumugham was established on 2nd May 2023 on 10 cents of land with a residence, generously offered by Rev. Fr. Shinto VC, Kolanchery. The convent carries out dedicated works of socio-pastoral ministry, reaching out with compassion to the needs of the local community. With gratitude, the community bows its head before the good God who has held their hand and led them on this path of growth. The guidance and collaborative efforts of many good people are behind this success. The community is very grateful to everyone.
May we, the members of this community, be blessed and guided to work with the Church. We offer our heartfelt and sincere gratitude with love.
Mission Rationale : The foundation in India responded to a twofold need: renewal of monastic/religious life in a cultural context that still treasured spiritual values, and a concrete outreach to those marginalized by poverty, illness, superstition, and social neglect. The Sisters considered their Indian mission a re-birthing of the monastic presence — bringing Gospel compassion to new “Calvaries” in India.
